Interior design and home decorating magazines, websites and blogs are always attentive to what’s trending in home décor. That awareness is heightened as a new year approaches. We recently featured a post highlighting Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 Radiant Orchid, the hottest of hot trends right now.

Today, we’re sharing our picks for the top 5 interior design trends and ideas for the coming year. The first two of our top trends come from Elle Décor in collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar runway trend spotters. This Spring Fashion at Home series includes the tag line, “Update any room by translating the top Spring Fashion 2014 trends to your home.”

First up is the timeless color duo black and white. For the new year, it’s updated with spectacular geometric shapes that are sure to wake up white on white rooms. Graphic black and white is here to make a bold eye-catching design statement.

Our second pick, also from The fashion at home series, is called architectural white. We’re intrigued by this description from Harper’s Bazaar, “White’s buttoned-up structured side rears its sleek head on spring’s catwalks…” This sleek kitchen seems to epitomize that architectural white look.

Another exciting trend that just keeps going strong is Mid-Century modern. Of course, Mad Men has fueled interest in modern design, but we think young furniture designers who are offering creative designs at an affordable price are also having a big impact on today’s modern interiors.

We totally agree with the professionals at Neil Kelly Company, who call themselves remodelers for the real world, when they chose stand alone tubs as their #3 trend for 2014. We’ve been noticing more and more beautiful sculpted tub designs showing up over the past few months and expect this appealing and practical (A freestanding tub takes up much less space than  the traditional tiled in tub.) trend to continue to grow.

Michelle from Studio}m did some trend spotting (along with 75,000 other visitors) at the amazing High Point Market and came away with three trends she believes will be strong in 2014. The three are Organic Glamour, Color Crush and the Well-Traveled Man, which we chose for our top interior design idea for 2014.

This look is much more refined and not so dark and moody as some of the “manly” styles we’ve seen recently. It’s a very modern take on a masculine space—think clean lines with an elegant feel. We’ll be watching this interesting trend during 2014.
