Spring is here and we’re thinking about color, especially those vivid hues that bring irresistible style to our modern interiors. Color experts tell us each color has a meaning of its own and can evoke an emotional, and sometimes physical, response in humans. Have you ever gasped or sighed at the sight of a new vivid-hued fabric or upholstered piece? We thought it would be fun to explore a few of the brilliant colors that can be seen in our modern seating collections. What is your color of choice?

Pantone describes its 2014 color of the year, Radiant Orchid, as “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” Purple is also said to encourage creativity and imagination. We love this particular orchid because it seems to be a very sophisticated version of pink.

The color red is associated with emotions from love to rage, but in our world of interior color it represents power, strength, energy, excitement and enthusiasm. It stimulates the body and increases visual interest. Among Pantone’s 2013 color trends was a vibrant Poppy Red, while red shows up this year in the form of exotic Sangria and a sophisticated hue called Aurora Red. We see red seating as a great opportunity to introduce a bold pop of color (think red lounge chair) or a splash of a vivid hue (think red love seat or sofa.)

Brilliant yellows evoke thoughts of sunshine and hope. We often consider it to represent happiness and optimism. It is also said to stimulate memory and enhance communication. In 2013, Pantone went for yellow in a vibrant way with a glorious hue called Lemon Zest, while the company’s favorite yellow for 2014 is toned-down version, Misted Yellow. This lovely color is warm like sunshine and exudes a wonderful sense of optimism.

When Turquoise was named Pantone’s 2010 color of the year, the company’s press release described it this way, “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.” We think that is the ultimate description of the ever-popular and enduring hue called turquoise. Year after year, turquoise is close to the top of our list of truly captivating colors.
